New Bird Species Discovered in Columbia

The Yariguíes Slate-crowned Antpitta is a new species that was recently discovered near the Cerulean Warbler Reserve in the Yariguíes mountain range of Columbia. It is actually a subspecies of the Slate-crowned Antpitta, a known species, but was determined to be distinct from other Slate-crowned Antpittas in several ways. It was discovered by explorers with the ProAves Foundation. The bird was described as having unique shades of orange and olive in its plumage and a short, low-pitched song, that sets it apart from other Slate-crowned Antpittas. The Yariguíes subspecies was given the scientific name Grallaricula nana hallsi, to honor the memory of Alan G. Halls, a British birder who died around the time the species was discovered. This is only one of many discoveries that are coming out of the previously unexplored Yariguíes mountain region.
