Kirtland’s Warbler: Recovering?

According to the latest national census, the number of singing males of the endangered species counted was 1,791. This gives an extrapolated total population estimate of over 3,500. Not to worry though, the Kirtland’s will not be taken off the endangered species’ list any time soon, because their nesting requirements will continue to rely upon human intervention.

Habitat protection, then, is the key factor in determining the Kirtland’s survival. Chalk up the progress thus far to dedicated activist efforts, the spreading of awareness through news media, the internet, and word of mouth, and the willingness of state governments to intervene on the birds’ behalf. While the future remains uncertain, hopefully the Kirtland’s warbler will continue to thrive and spread in years to come.
