Birding Hotspots in the US: Cheyenne Bottoms & Quivira
Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge and Quivira Wildlife Refuge, located in Great Bend, Kansas, are two of the big up-and-coming birding hotspots in the US.
Shorebird lovers and waterfowl lovers will find these refuges of particular interest, as they are home to a wide variety of species of migratory waterfowl and shorebirds. Species of special interest include the White-faced Ibis, Wood Stork, King Rail, Snowy Plover, Reddish Egret, and Tri-colored Heron. Cheyenne Bottoms’ website even includes a full list of species that can be seen at the refuge, and the times of year they appear: http://www.cheyennebottoms.net/b_w_birdlist.html
As many as 320 different bird species may be present in Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira. Although lesser known than some birding locations, these refuges are key nesting grounds for migratory birds, located along the Central Flyway, and are conveniently located in the country’s heartland.
